Keoladeo Ghana National Park, Rajasthan

Famously known as the Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary, is a hub for migratory birds and thrives particularly in the winter season. It was declared as a protected sanctuary in the year 1971. It caters to around 100,000 visitors annually! A surprising fact about this sanctuary is that it is man-made. The wetlands which were earlier used as hunting grounds are now converted into reserves protecting Bharatpur from calamities like floods & droughts. It also served as visiting grounds for The Siberian Cranes until it got centrally extinct. The rich vegetation also attracts a lot of migratory & resident birds. The best time to visit is undoubtingly the winter months.

 

Thattekkad Bird Sanctuary, Kerela

Known as the ‘richest bird habitat on peninsular India’, is located on the banks of the Periyar river ( the longest river in Kerela). It attracts a humungous birdlife, some of which include, the Orange-headed thrush, Oriental darter, Jerdon’s nightjar, Indian cuckoo, etc. The Indian Pitta, a rare species, spends around six months residing at this sanctuary.

 

Mangalajodi, Odisha

On the northern edge of the well-known Chillika lake, is an old village of Mangalajodi in the Khordha district. There must be something special in this place because it acts as a host to thousands of migratory birds from far corners of the world! It is a heaven for the ‘waterbirds’. You can spot Ruddy-breasted Crake, Garganey, Asian Palm Swift, Pied Kingfisher, Pheasant-tailed Jacana, etc in its vast green grounds. Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary, Tamil Nadu

The South-Indian regions attract a larger flock of birds due to diverse vegetation & unearthly flora. It is located in the Madurantakam taluk of the state of Tamil Nadu, India. Every year, migratory birds like the, grey wagtail, blue-winged teal, common sandpiper, etc pay a visit here. Namdapha National Park, Arunachal Pradesh

Situated in the lap of mighty hills of North-Eastern India, this National park is a hotspot for biodiversity. It also comprises dense forests and equally diverse flora. There are about 425 bird species present here. Some of them consist of rare wren-babblers, parrotbills, fulvettas, laughing thrushes, etc. You can also find some settlements of people from Lisu Tribe within the park. Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary, Goa

This sanctuary is named after the eminent Indian ornithologist, Salim Ali. One can experience a real-life movie experience here, as the pavements are often covered by mangroves and transport is through ferry boats!
